I completely agree with this! I wish that my teachers had spent more time focusing on handwriting. But they went striaght to "All The Right Type" after pushing us through a speedy handwriting unit and never went back to the pen. Now my writing is horrible, manly as my mother says, and I'm petrified to handwright anything becuase of it!
But I'll still write out my flash cards dutifully every exam. I don't think I learn it until I start actually writing down words and theories and involving my brain in trying to write "neatly".
As we discussed in a recent class, the child without a computer is disadvantaged. Looks like the child who is not able to hand-write is disadvantaged, as well! I imagine that teaching everything that is necessary to prepare a student for "the future" is a balancing act... new tools to do new things and new tools (like the iPad and iPhone) to do traditional things.
I completely agree! Whenever I study, I will always re-write out my notes and I find that just by writing them down I seem to learn them better. From grades 5-7 almost every assignment we did had to be handwritten and I remember wondering why, but know I realize they were on to something!
I would have to agree with all of you on this subject. When I study I have to write concepts out to remember then too! I think hand writing is a very important skill to have even in this day and age. I agree with Deb when she commented that it is about finding the balance between hand writing and using technology. I think that is why I like the post pen from Livescribe so much. It has the best of both worlds! The student can practice their writing skills while still being able to put it in a computer for easy manipulation of the data.
